PR update: and the magic number is 3
Posted by: | CommentsIt looks like Big G wanted to do one more PR update before the new year! I am happy with this PR update has frogstr went straight from PR 0 to PR 3 and that, within three months. It seems like PR3 is the magic number this time as many people claim to have received a PR3: not more, not less. For my part, most of my websites have a PR2 or a PR3 right after this update. Honestly, nothing really changed except for frogstr, but that’s because the blog is only 3 months old and it’s the first real Page Rank update I go through with it. Overall, it’s all good.
How can I verify my Page Rank?
So you want to know what your Page Rank is? Well, there are a couple of ways to do so. I personally use SEO Quake for Firefox and the toolbar gives me the Page Rank of every website I visit so this is good. I once did a review of SEO Quake (it’s free!) and I suggest you have a look at it if you don’t use it, it’s one of the best tool out there. Otherwise, I suggest these other two Page Rank checker:
http://www.prchecker.info/check_page_rank.php
http://www.tareeinternet.com/scripts/pagerank/
Should you care?
Should you care about your Page Rank? Well, it is of course a metric of how “important” Google think you are, but this is not what will make the difference between 10 visitors a day and a thousand visitors a day. So I say, let’s get back to work, focus on creating content, build your brand, build backlinks and traffic and the PageRank will just be a result of all your hard work. Anyway, trust me, it’s possible to get 500-1000 visitors a day with a PR0 website, all from search engines.
See the PageRank the other way around
A lot of people will try to do everything they can to get a higher PR and then hope to rank higher in Google to drive more traffic. Instead of working on increasing your PR to get traffic as a result of that, work on getting traffic and the PageRank will come with it.
Are you happy with the update?
So, are you happy with this new update? Let us know if big G love you or slapped you!
What’s cooking for 2009?
Posted by: | CommentsI’ve spend a lot of time lately thinking about 2009 and what I should focus on. “focus” is really the right word here as I think spending 3 hours a day on 1 or 2 projects is much better than spending the same 3 hours on a hundred different projects. Otherwise, you don’t get anything done. So, I am sharing with you guys my plan for 2009. Don’t confuse plan with goals as I feel they are two completely different things.
The local business
It is weird, but while most people try to go from an offline business to an online business, I am kind of trying to do the opposite. In fact, I see HUGE potential in helping small and medium businesses succeed or position themselves online. I think small companies using the Internet to promote their business will literally explode in the coming years and I want to jump into that market. Well, this is true for where I live in Canada, I don’t know about your local market.
With Internet and social medias, the way you build and promote a business has changed a lot in the past years and helping small businesses take the turn really drives me. I mean, I really feel the potential. There was a time a couple of years ago when you just needed a website to promote your business online, but now things have changed and are a bit more complex than that. You need a strategy with that website, you need to target keywords you want to rank for in Google, you need to spread the word using social medias, etc. It doesn’t cost a lot of money or doesn’t require out of this world skills, but small/medium and even large corporations don’t know where to start.
I always try to focus on projects that depend on me and not on another business/third party. I love making money using AdSense for example, but if for whatever reason in 10 or 15 years AdSense or Google doesn’t exist anymore, what will I do? I know we can’t imagine a world without Google or AdSense, but just look at how fast things are moving in this business. This is just an example as I think Google will still be around in 10 years from now, but they are already experimenting with social rankings (rankings influenced by the end user) and I don’t see building websites strictly for AdSense being a viable lifetime project for me for that very specific reason. The 35 years old mother will have more impact on the rankings in the coming years and that’s why I think a lot of people will lose if they don’t build websites for people. Don’t get me wrong here, I do it and will continue to do it, but they always say don’t put your eggs all in the same basket, right?
That was just an example, but I think it expresses very well why I am driving projects that make money because of me. The local business is a great opportunity not only to build my personal brand, but also to build a REAL business. That is the perfect way for me to use what I know about Internet Marketing in real life scenarios with real people and real businesses.
I am already working on my first contract, business cards are on the way and I’m also working on my website for this business. I am serious about it and it will be a great and fun challenge for me in 2009.
Doing what I’ve studied for
Another reason why I want to merge my online and offline businesses is to put everything I’ve learned all together. I will be graduating in December next year and honestly, I want to put that almost 5 years computer engineering degree to good use. I’ve learned SO MUCH in the past year online when it comes to Internet/social medias strategies and I feel like there’s something great I can do with that and my computer knowledge.
You see, that computer engineering degree is about building software, hardware, managing projects & teams and all that kind of stuff , so I can offer complete solutions to customers/companies when it comes to building their brand online. I can build whatever website they need and also code whatever they need. Whether they need a custom solution to take orders online or a Wordpress based solution, I can do it on top of the online strategy plan. My goal is to focus a lot more on the online strategy plan, but I can still do whatever is needed when it comes to coding/building websites.
The online business
I love doing business online and will continue to do so! I will continue to blog, build new websites, flip websites and increase AdSense revenues because it pays the bills and also because I love it. But, as I said, I will really try to merge the online business with the offline business and create the perfect business opportunity for me.
Joint ventures
Yep, some really nice and interesting joint ventures are on the plate for 2009, but this is a big secret! Honestly, I can feel some great things will come out of these joint ventures, but unfortunately, I can’t talk about them now. Stay tuned!
frogstr
I love this blog, you guys and the community here, so you can be sure frogstr is a big part of my 2009 strategy. It is incredible the people I’ve met this year because of this very specific blog and the relationships I’ve built. I have good plans to turn the blog into a stronger community and you will see the changes very soon. I also want to put the focus on you guys and not just on me so I have a small project where you will be able to answer questions and share your personal experiences on some Internet Marketing subjects. I think it will be great!
I will also introduce the “reputation” concept instead of the “top commentators” concept. Why is that? Because I’ve seen a couple of times on this blog and a lot of times on other blogs people showing up, dropping a comment on the last 10 posts and then they never came back. Well yes, they come back the month after around the same date just to be a top commentator again. As I said, this didn’t happen very often here as I have a solid community, but I don’t feel the top commentator plugin always rewards the right persons. Comments aren’t about the quantity, it’s about the quality.
I will have a great offer in January for you guys to get business cards CHEAP. I always talk about small things add up and make a difference in the end when it comes to branding and business cards are part of that, so I got you a nice deal! I would like to make more of that kind of stuff during 2009.
Am I planning to monetize frogstr any further? I don’t make my money online with this blog and I don’t really plan to. I mean, I will keep the 125×125 banners, but it is more a place for me to share my knowledge and experiences.
That’s about it
This is what I will try to focus on in 2009. I guess what really stands out in this plan is to build my personal brand locally, build the frogstr community and some awesome joint ventures. And don’t get me wrong when I say I want to work on a local/offline business, this online stuff is still REALLY important for me and will still be very active. I will just watch less T.V.
Let me know what you think!
Today, no creative title: Merry Christmas
Posted by: | CommentsMost of you guys will be with your family today, celebrating Christmas. I am no different and I would like to take the time to wish you and all the ones you love a Merry Christmas! I know there are probably some of you who don’t celebrate Christmas, but this makes no difference to me, I still want to thank you and wish you at least a very nice day.
This is also a great opportunity for me to say thank you for being part of this. Every single time I wasn’t too sure if what I was writing or talking about was a little bit too much “on the edge”, you guys always gave great feedback and I thank you for this. Or is it because you guys jump to the comment section directly?
Have fun with your family and your friends and enjoy every single moment, because I will too!
Again, happy holidays!
Ben.
Welcome to frogstr 2.0
Posted by: | CommentsHere it is, the new frogstr! I listenend to you guys and tried to put the focus on the things you like. So, I don’t know about you, but I feel comfortable here!
Seriously, the feedback you gave me last week was really helpful to me.
The changes
The videos seem to work pretty well and I received some positive feedback so far so I tried to make them more accessible for you, but also for first time visitors. I think it is now very clear that this blog has videos…
I removed some stuff from the sidebar as well, like the tag cloud which let’s face it, wasn’t very helpful. So, now I only have the “subscribe options”, recent posts, archive and categories. I moved the top commentators in the footer with the recent comments and my twitter feed. I decided to add the twitter feed as I’ve been very active on twitter lately and it’s a nice little addition. If you don’t like it, it’s in the footer so you can’t really complain!
I also made a lot of changes here and there and would take a lot of time to go through all of them so I just say: have a look around.
Subscriptions
One thing you will notice is that I am a lot less aggressive on the “subscribe to blog” field. This is for a very simple reason: I noticed blogs with like 300 subscribers or more don’t necessarily receive more traffic or more comments than I do, so what’s REALLY important to me is that you guys come back and drop comments. My bet with this new layout is that by focusing a lot more on the content/user experience, people will subscribe just because they like the blog and not because a freackin’ popup asks them to. I might be wrong and in fact I’m 99% sure I’m wrong, but I like to think this will work. I will probably add a “subscribe by email” box at the end of each post like I on the old layout, but that will be it.
The vision
The vision with that new layout and the vision I have for this blog for the next couple of months is really just to build my personal brand and build a community in here. This will be achieved with your help and frogstr has to be a nice place to visit to achieve this goal. I hope it’s a success from that point of view…
Tell me, it’s for you
Tell me what you think because that new design is for you. I always try to think about the user first and not the stats so tell me if it’s a success. Otherwise, I might have to go with popups and affiliates offers all over the place!
Why do you read frogstr?
Posted by: | CommentsI was working on the next layout for frogstr tonight and I was still wondering what to include and what not to include in my new layout. To find that out, I tried to figure out why people visit frogstr and what kind of information they are looking for. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a lot harder than I thought.
It’s then I realized…
It’s then I realized I never asked you guys a very simple question: Why do you visit frogstr? I really want to know as it will help me focus on the right things and it’s a good opportunity to receive some feedback and make things better.
Thanks for reading the blog
Could I really ask you for feedback on why you visit the blog regularly without thanking you for visiting? I don’t think so no! So let’s do it: thanks guys for visiting this blog!
The truth is that I REALLY appreciate you visiting the website and I am always amazed to see how many comments you guys leave. You know, I really like to write what I think whether or not it pleases everybody and for that reason, I never really know what to expect in terms of feedback. But so far, it seems to have worked pretty well so thank you.
So, why do you visit?
Back to the main question, I’d appreciate if you could tell me why you read and visit the blog. So, as usual, drop a comment and let me know!
Right, contest is over: did you win?
Posted by: | CommentsAright, my quick contest on my “vision” post is now over and the “right” number was 29! Did you get that one right? Well, to be fair I’ve included everyone who said between 25 and 29 in the contest because I’m a nice guy and I appreciate the effort. To all of you who said: “Oh, I’m too late!”, where did you guys see that?
Anyway, here are the winners of the contest:
- Bruno Auger from brunoauger.com
- Adele from Yoga Babe Cafe
- Rarst from www.rarst.net (Yeah dude, you managed to get some more link love)
What are the prizes?
- A blog review
- A copy of Danny Cooper’s blog comment blueprint
- A 125×125 ad for 30 days on frogstr
Did you notice I didn’t put any number next to each prize? That is because I want to do things in a different way again. It is going to be very easy: I’d like each winner to just write a comment or drop me an email at ben @ frogstr.com with the prizes listed in order of preference! So, this way the first winner doesn’t end up with something he doesn’t need and it gives the #2 and #3 winners a chance to get what they want. If I don’t receive an answer within a couple of days from every winner, I’ll have to give the prizes in whatever order I feel is OK.
So here it is, congrats to the winners and thanks for participating guys!
Why there won’t be any video this morning (and a life lesson)
Posted by: | CommentsThere won’t be any Monday’s video this morning and here’s why: I had to take care of a website auction that went crazy this morning when a bidder decided to add two extra zeros to the bid making it in the thousands instead of the hundreds! Yep, you can imagine the nightmare. Anyway, nothing against the bidder, we all make mistakes and we’ll work this out.
The lesson is that if you ever run an auction on SitePoint, never auto-approve any bidder. It is not a matter of whether or not you trust the buyer, but simply that as humans, we make mistakes. I’ve learned that the hard way today so don’t make that mistake!
The video will be posted tonight as I have to encode it properly before posting it on Viddler. Good news is that I’ll run a small contest with the video, so stay tuned!
Rubik’s Cube Vs Internet Marketing
Posted by: | CommentsHere it is my friends! I told you last week I would do it, solve the Rubik’s Cube in front of you, so here it is. I didn’t want to go the traditional way and just do the Cube without saying anything, so during the video, I compare how solving the Rubik’s Cube is extremely similar to running a blog, a website or even a business! Here it is my friends, I don’t think an Internet Marketer has ever solved the Rubik’s Cube on camera so it’s a first
(apparently John Chow did it once, thanks Jimbo.) I really enjoyed doing it and hope you’ll enjoy it as well!
frupdates: Some updates from the frog
Posted by: | CommentsToday isn’t going to be about how you guys can reach success in three easy steps unfortunately. I want to talk a little bit about this blog, what I’ve accomplished so far and where I’m going. I also want to talk about the Rubik’s Cube challenge I will do for you guys next week
Does the frog know his stuff?
One thing I want to cover here before going any further is something I have never talked about before: do I know my stuff? What do I know about blogging? What do I know about Internet Marketing? I think it is important for some people when reading that kind of blog, because you want to know if you can trust what you’re reading! You know, I don’t consider this blog to be a “Make Money Online” blog, I think it is a mix between blogging tips, Internet Marketing, personal development and yes some MMO. Now, there is a thousand of MMO/blogging tips blog out there started by people with absolutely no experience online. It is OK when your blog is about your online journey, as you talk about what you’re trying, what’s working and what’s not working, but otherwise it is weird. First, this is not my first blog: I started with another blog about some scams debunking/science stuff (That engineering/science background has to be useful, right?) a little less than a year ago and it is driving between 400-1000 visitors a day. It’s no big deal, but it helped me build some decent skills about marketing and SEO! I don’t just blog: my main thing is AdSense PPC and I’m doing an OK job at it so far. So you know, I’m no guru or whatever, but I have some previous blogging experience in another niche than blogging tips, MMO or whatever you want to call it (which I think is something a lot of people should do) and I also have some good CPC experience. But you know, I’m always trying to improve and learn more and I don’t pretend to be a guru, so that’s why I’m in this business with you guys!
Is the frog satisfied?
I am satisfied with what I have accomplished so far to be honest. seohorror.com (previous name of frogstr.com) started a couple of months ago, but I really decided to get serious about it in September when I launched frogstr. I had a decent readership from SEO Horror so I didn’t start with nothing, but I can say that most of the work I’ve done was on frogstr and it all started mid-September. Within a month and a half I made some very good progress I think and I am sure you will agree with me. I also started to really get involved in the community and I met some really nice people recently! I can say I really love what I do.
With the introduction of the frogstr show yesterday, frogstr.com really took a step forward and I’m pretty sure it is in the right direction. I received some really positive comments regarding the video and also a decent amount of comments which makes me think most of you guys liked it. If you didn’t, then you’ll have to cope with the fact that there will be more! Me being a little bit evil here, but I enjoyed doing the video and I won’t stop having fun and enjoying what I do!
Stats wise, it is all good and showing some constant progress. I would like a little bit more traffic, but we always want more traffic, right? I usually average 20+ comments on every post and that’s what really matters to me. If you guys like what I do and comment, I’m happy. Backlinks are starting to get in and I plan to intensify my search for backlinks for sure. Yes, this is me doing some SEO whether you guys enjoy that or not…It is essential (mostly)! Technorati is going pretty well with 39 blog reactions in a month and a half which is pretty good I think. That would make around 150 blog reactions for the Technorati’s 6 months period and that sounds pretty good to me. I’m not revealing my RSS subscriber count yet, but it’s not too bad. This probably is one of the main aspect I want to improve in the coming months though.
What’s coming?
There are three things I want to work on and improve before Christmas: RSS subscribers, Twitter followers and frogstr show.
That’s right, it’s no surprise to you guys that I want to improve my RSS subscribers count as it is what every blogger is trying to do. So no surprises, but I want to put an extra effort into it.
Next thing I want to keep working on is twitter. If you guys haven’t realized it yet, twitter is going to be huge and you better get into it before it’s too late, so that’s what I’m doing.
Finally, the frogstr show! I really enjoyed making the first video and I’m planning to make at least one per week that will be shot during the weekend and posted every Monday. I might post other videos here and there into articles, but we’ll see how things go.
The Rubik’s Cube Challenge!
Adam from creadiv.com noticed in my last video that there was an unfinished Rubik’s Cube on my desk and he wanted it done by next week, in a video. I then mentioned I could finish it withing a couple of minutes and then Freddie from FreddieTaylor.com jumped like a frog into the conversation and basically wanted it done live in front of the camera too! No worries folks, the next frogstr show will be me solving the Rubik’s Cube and don’t worry, I will be relating this to web marketing in a way I think you’re all going to like.
That’s it
That’s all I had to say! The blog is in good shape and will keep growing! I’d also like to thank you guys for commenting on the blog so regularly!
